Rainout pushes Pettitte’s return to Wednesday

Tuesday night’s scheduled game between the Yankees and the Blue Jays was postponed because of inclement weather. The first weather-related postponement at the Stadium this year pushed back Andy Pettitte’s return to the rotation by 18 hours. The lefthander will start the 1:05 p.m. portion of Wednesday’s split-admission doubleheader for the Yankees and David Phelps the 7:05 p.m. game.

The only tickets valid for Wednesday’s 1:05 p.m. game are tickets dated Sept. 18. Fans holding paid tickets for Tuesday night’s game may use them for the rescheduled game or exchange their paid tickets for any regular season game at the Stadium during the 2012 or 2013 season (subject to availability). Yanks lose off day due to Saturday postponements

Major League Baseball and the Orioles would not heed the Yankees’ earlier request that the teams play two games Friday night at Camden Yards to avoid a washout of Saturday’s split-admission doubleheader due to Hurricane Irene reaching Baltimore, so what happened? After consulting with MLB and the National Weather Service during Friday night’s game, the Orioles announced the postponement of Saturday games.

Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. game will be made up Sept. 8 at a time to be determined as the Yankees will lose another open date on the schedule, something they had hoped to avoid by playing two games Friday. Saturday’s 7:05 p.m. game will be made up at 7:35 p.m. Sunday as part of a dual-admission doubleheader with the regularly scheduled afternoon game to start at 1:35.

Tickets dated Aug. 27 at 7:05 p.m. will only be accepted at the 7:35 p.m. game Aug. 28. No exchange is necessary. Fans should bring their original tickets to the ballpark gates for admission. Saturday’s 1:05 p.m. game was a makeup for a game rained out April 22. Tickets dated Aug. 27 at 1:05 p.m. or April 22 will be accepted only for the game Sept. 8. Again, no exchange is necessary, and fans should bring their original tickets to the ballpark gates for admission.

Fans unable to attend any of the games this weekend may exchange their tickets for any remaining game during the 2011 season, subject to availability. Ticket exchanges must be completed by Sept. 28. Parking passes will be honored for the makeup games only and are non-transferable.

The Orioles’ offices and Official Team Store at the Warehouse will be closed tomorrow. Due to the impeding weather, road closures and public transportation closures in New York, the Yankee Stadium Ticket Office will be closed Saturday and Sunday.

It was clear that the Orioles did not want to lose a gate against the Yankees by not agreeing to play a doubleheader Friday. They could have still completed the series even if Saturday’s two games were lost to the storm by arranging for split-admission games Sunday or Monday.

The Yankees’ disappointment was expressed in a statement released in the name of center fielder Curtis Granderson, the club’s player representative:

“Given the advance notice and the fact that other teams have adjusted their schedules ahead of time, we are perplexed at the current options we are being presented with in regards to making up any games postponed due to Hurricane Irene. The proposition to take away our only full off day in the final month of the season is not an option, even though the Orioles’ front office and the commissioner’s office think this is an adequate solution. It’s a shame that the decision has now come down to possibly having to play four games in two days or having to come back to Baltimore for another makeup game.”

Health concerns affecting All-Star status

The Yankees’ contingent to next week’s All-Star Game is shrinking by the day. Mariano Rivera, who is bothered by a sore right triceps, has decided rest during the three-day break would be the best medicine for his condition. He was joined Friday by Derek Jeter, who just returned from the disabled list this week and believes his right calf would benefit from additional rest as well.

While the tarp was on the field at Yankee Stadium during a late-afternoon period of showers, Alex Rodriguez was undergoing an MRI on his aching right knee at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and announced through the Yankees that he won’t play Tuesday night at Chase Field in Phoenix, either.

Jeter (shortstop) and Rodriguez (third base) were voted into the American League starting lineup in the fans balloting, and Rivera was named to the pitching staff through the players’ vote. Two other Yankees were also selected in the fans vote to start in the game, Robinson Cano at second base and Curtis Granderson in the outfield. Russell Martin was picked as the backup catcher.

The caution of the Yankees’ players is justified. While it is a great honor to be chosen for an All-Star team, the event itself is an exhibition game, albeit one whose outcome decides home-field advantage in the World Series. Nevertheless, the health of players to a contending team getting ready for the second half of the season is more important than their status for an All-Star Game.

Of more importance Friday was whether the Yankees would be able to get in the game against the Rays. The forecast called for showers throughout the night. The game was eventually postponed and will be made up Sept. 22.

This was not good news for the Yankees. Despite all the health issues they face (in addition to A-Rod, right fielder Nick Swisher was out of the lineup because of a bruised left quad), the Yankees voted as a team to play a dual-admission doubleheader Saturday, but the Rays voted against it.

At that point, it became a matter of finding a mutual date. Had the Yankees been willing to play a regular doubleheader Saturday, the Rays’ vote would not have mattered. The rules regarding split-admission doubleheaders require that both teams agree. The Yankees did not want to give up a date, which was understandable considering it is in the middle of the summer and the games scheduled Friday, Saturday and Sunday were all sold out.

And there was the matter of Jeter’s pursuit of 3,000 hits. The last three games before the All-Star break were his shot at reaching the milestone at the Stadium, and the Yankees just lost one of those games. After the break, the Yankees go on an eight-game trip to Toronto and St. Petersburg, Fla.

Fans holding paid tickets for Friday night’s postponed game may use them for the rescheduled game Sept. 22 or exchange them for any regular-season game at Yankee Stadium within 12 months of the postponed game, subject to availability. Please not that there is an extremely limited number of tickets remaining for Saturday’s and Sunday’s games against the Rays.

Tickets may be exchanged only at Yankee Stadium Advance Ticket Windows, which are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and until two hours after the scheduled start time of any regularly scheduled home game.

Complimentary tickets or equivalent tickets bear no cash value and cannot be exchanged or redeemed for any benefits that may be offered to tickets with a dollar value. For complete information about the Yankees’ rainout policy, visit http://www.yankees.com/rainout.

When it rains, it pours

Tuesday night’s rainout wasn’t the only bad news for the Yankees. They discovered that relief pitcher Pedro Feliciano is not close to returning from the 15-day disabled list and will undergo an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Wednesday. The Yankees also plan to place reliever Luis Ayala on the DL before Wednesday night’s game because of a muscle strain.

Feliciano, 34, who was signed to a two-year, $8-million contact in the off-season, did not open the season with the Yankees due to a strained left rotator cuff. He felt discomfort in the area again in a throwing session Tuesday in the bullpen.

“He’s still not ready,” manager Joe Girardi said.

Ayala strained his right side during his two-inning stint Saturday in Boston. The Yankees may use his spot on the 25-man roster to bring up a lefthander. With Feliciano unavailable, Boone Logan has been the only left-handed pitcher in the pen.

Fans holding paid ticket for the April 12 postponed game may use them for the rescheduled game between the Yankees and the Orioles, which will not be made up this week. The teams will play single games Wednesday and Thursday nights. Fans may also exchange their paid tickets for ant regular-season game at Yankee Stadium within 12 months, subject to availability.

Tickets may be exchanged at the Stadium Advance Ticket Windows only (open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and until two hours after the scheduled start time of any regularly-scheduled home game).

Girardi said that the Yankees will remain in rotation with A.J. Burnett starting Wednesday night and Phil Hughes Thursday night.
